Being a great singer, no matter what style you choose, is not just about talent. There are several ways in which taking private voice lessons can improve the voice. During lessons, singers study the following:

Vocal TechniqueDuring lessons, students learn how to use the voice properly, in a way which helps to improve their tone quality, durability, and volume. This is done by learning to let go of bad habits, often developed by singers who sing often with no knowledge of vocal technique, and by developing a solid breathing technique. Singers also learn how to "place" the voice properly. By practicing in this fashion, students are able to strengthen, develop and refine their natural voices, without experiencing the fatigue brought on by bad habits.

Musicianship-  Being a good musician is essential to being a good singer! Music reading skills are not neglected during voice lessons. Students (especially those participating in NYSSMA and college auditions) are given a thorough education in sight-singing.  The goal is to eventually become a more independent musician, so that the singers can teach themselves the notes of their songs without the aid of a recording or an instructor. They may then spend more time on developing vocal technique during private voice lessons.

Stage Presence-  If you're singing on stage, then you should be acting too! No matter how good you sound, any singer's performance can be enhanced by getting into character. That's why students learn how to study the dramatic aspect of any song they sing, and then translate that into a vivid and entertaining performance. Vocal students also have the option of having their songs fully staged in annual recitals, which includes stage movements, costumes, props, and scenery.

Pronunciation- It's important for audiences to understand what a singer is saying. Also, if the song is in a foreign language, then the words need to be pronounced properly. In voice lessons, students are taught how to make their words clear. Foreign language songs are studied in detail, using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

Violin Lessons at Marianna's Music Studio
The violin is one of the most beautiful instruments ever created. It's also one of the most difficult of instruments to learn. At Marianna's Music Studio, students discover how to master the art of violin playing by taking a traditional approach:

Technical Skills- During lessons, students learn the basics of playing the violin properly. Everything from the bow hold, posture, left hand fingering and right handing bowing techniques are taught and perfected in detail.

Musicianship- In class, music reading skills are developed through method books, exercises, and songs of gradually increasing difficulty.     Students also learn how to play scales, and how to develop a musical ear. This is essential for violinists, as there are no frets on this instrument and the   violinist must have good aural skills in order to play in tune.

Stage Presence- Performing is an essential part of a musician's education. All students at Marianna's Music Studio have at least 2 opportunities annually to perform solos in a recital. Students are prepared during lessons. Once the    solos have been mastered, students practice getting over their stage fright by doing mock performances in lessons, as well as a dress rehearsal prior to a recital. Students are also encouraged to perform elsewhere whenever possible, such as in local and school events like talent shows, concerts, competitions and NYSSMA festivals. The more a student performs, the sooner that student will master stage fright and become a more confident performer.
